The chain timings, the conveyancing-office hours, the removals diary, the price — all shift between weekdays and weekends, and between days within the working week. The headline answer for most customers: Friday is the default because of how conveyancing completions schedule, Saturday is the busiest because of the customer-side preference, and Tuesday-to-Thursday in mid-month is the cheapest because demand is lower. The detail below covers each day with the operational pros and cons we’d flag at survey stage.
Friday is the most common completion day in UK property transactions. The reasons: solicitors prefer to clear cases before the weekend (they don’t want completion problems lingering into Monday morning), and the property market has settled into a Friday rhythm over decades. Roughly 40–50% of UK property completions happen on Fridays.
Operationally, this makes Friday the most common move day too. The advantages: most chains are aligned on Friday, the lorry routes are well-established, and the customer has a weekend to settle in at the new property before work restarts on Monday. The disadvantage: Friday completion-day chain slips are common, and a Friday completion that runs late can push the unload into evening when daylight is fading.
For most customers without specific timing constraints, Friday is the right default. If your conveyancer hasn’t specified a day, Friday is usually their suggestion too. The diary on Fridays is busiest of the working week so book early — 6–10 weeks ahead for Fridays in the May-to-September peak.
Saturday is the second-most-popular move day, and the busiest for the removals industry. The pull factors are real: no work conflict (most customers don’t need to take annual leave), full weekend ahead to unpack, and Saturday-only completions can sometimes be arranged through conveyancers willing to work the day.
The catches. Saturday conveyancing isn’t standard — many solicitors’ offices are closed and funds can’t transfer on a Saturday in the conventional banking sense. If the move is genuinely a Saturday completion, both solicitors need to be Saturday-working or pre-arranged for the day. The minority of Saturday completions are usually private-rental moves or owner-occupier-to-owner-occupier transactions where the legal side has been handled in advance.
For removals, Saturday is the highest-demand day of the week. Pricing in the summer peak runs 5–10% above Friday equivalents, partly because of the demand, partly because the depot-side overhead (weekend crew rates) is higher. For customers with flexibility, Tuesday and Wednesday mid-month are the cheapest and easiest dates to book. Demand is low (most chains push for Friday), the diary has more capacity, and crew rates are at the off-peak end. Pricing typically runs 10–15% below Saturday equivalents.
Conveyancing-wise, Tuesday and Wednesday are perfectly workable. Solicitors’ offices are open at full capacity, banks transfer funds normally, and there’s a clear runway of working days afterwards if any administrative tidying is needed. For customers without a chain (cash buyers, end-of-tenancy moves, owner-to-rental transitions), Tuesday or Wednesday is often the best single choice of day.
The disadvantage: most working customers need to take annual leave to be at the property. For households where both partners work, half a day each is usually enough but it’s a real time cost. For self-employed customers and retirees, the flexibility is straightforward to take advantage of. For school-age-children households, the school day continues normally on a Tuesday or Wednesday, which is fine if the family logistics work out.
Monday is the day we’d generally suggest avoiding for moves. The reasons: weekends accumulate chain administrative backlog (solicitors return on Monday with Friday-and-weekend issues to resolve), the depot side has the weekend-residue catching up, and the customer mood on a Monday move-day is often less calm than a Friday or Tuesday.
For owner-side moves with no chain, Monday can work. For chain-completion moves, Monday introduces an avoidable variable — weekend admin backlog can delay the funds-release window. We’ve had Monday completions that finished smoothly, but the chain-delay rate is higher than the equivalent Friday or Tuesday slot.
Monday pricing sits between Saturday peak and Tuesday off-peak, closer to off-peak. The diary on Mondays is generally available; the booking lead time is similar to mid-week dates. If your chain forces a Monday completion, work the move around it; don’t choose Monday as the default unless you specifically need it.
Thursday is one of the most underrated move days in the UK calendar. The conveyancing rhythm has had three days to clear any backlog (so Friday-style late delays are rarer), the chain pressure is less than Friday, and the cost typically sits between Tuesday off-peak and Friday default. For customers who can’t book a Friday but want a working-week move, Thursday is the natural alternative.
Practically, Thursday has the same operational profile as Friday with slightly more diary availability. The week-after-the-move feels different though: a Friday completion gives you the whole weekend to unpack; a Thursday completion gives you a Friday plus weekend, which is actually more time but feels less psychologically rewarding because work normally resumes on the Friday before the weekend.
For customers with hybrid working schedules (3 days office, 2 days from home), a Thursday move plus a day working-from-home at the new property on the Friday is a particularly good combination. The diary on Thursdays in the May-to-September peak is easier to book than Friday — 4–6 weeks ahead rather than 6–10.
Sunday is the least-common move day. Most conveyancing offices are closed on Sundays, banking is closed for the conventional funds-release window, and Sunday completions are essentially never available through the standard property-chain process. The Sundays that get used are usually private-rental moves, family-occupied moves with no chain, or specific commercial moves where the new building requires weekend access.
For removals specifically, Sundays are quieter than Saturdays but more expensive than mid-week. Some firms charge a Sunday premium (10–20% above standard); we typically don’t but it’s worth checking with any firm. The crew availability is more limited on Sundays so booking 4–6 weeks ahead is usually needed.
For specific scenarios where Sunday is the right answer (a Saturday completion that ran late, a leasehold building requiring weekend-only moves, a religious or cultural reason for avoiding other days), the operational complications are workable but the booking lead time matters. Bank holidays are essentially “Sunday equivalent” for move-day purposes — banks closed, conveyancers closed, no funds-release possible. Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, and the May, summer, and August bank holidays all fall in this category. For bank-holiday adjacent days (the working day before or after a bank holiday), demand is typically higher because customers prefer to wrap up the move in a long-weekend cluster. The price reflects this in the May-to-September peak; mid-week non-bank-holiday dates are cheaper. The diary on bank-holiday-adjacent days books up earlier than the equivalent non-bank-holiday week.
For customers who specifically want to use a bank-holiday weekend for a move (the long weekend gives more unpacking time), the Tuesday after the bank holiday is often the optimum — quieter diary than the Friday before, cheaper than the bank-holiday-adjacent days, and you have the long weekend already used for prep and the new working week to start fresh.
