Mark Ratcliffe Moving sleeper-cab lorry used for long-distance and overseas removals

Removals to Spain are our second-most-requested international service after France. Since 2017 Mark Ratcliffe Moving has shipped Sussex homes to every part of Spain — Costa Blanca retirement villas, Catalan apartments, Costa del Sol gated developments, Balearic finca conversions and inland Andalucían pueblos blancos. Spain is a road-freight destination (no shipping container required) which keeps timelines short and costs predictable, but it does need the NIE residency number, careful customs paperwork, and a destination agent who knows the regional quirks of Spanish customs. We are a British Association of Removers (BAR) Overseas Group member and we file every Transfer of Residence (ToR1) application ourselves.

Why so many Sussex families choose Spain

Spain has been the British retiree’s preferred destination for thirty years and the appeal has only deepened. The climate is the headline draw — 300 days of sun a year on the Costa del Sol, mild winters in Valencia, the dry warmth of inland Andalucía. Property in much of Spain remains a quarter to a half of equivalent Sussex prices. The food, the pace of life, the affordable healthcare for residents, the direct flights back to Gatwick or Heathrow when family events require it — all of it stacks up. Post-Brexit, Spain’s non-lucrative visa and digital nomad visa have given new options for the under-65s, and the British community across the costas means English-speaking support is easy to find.

We move retirees, second-home owners, remote-working families, Spanish nationals returning home after years in the UK, and a growing number of younger movers heading for Catalonia or the Basque Country for work. Every move starts with a free survey at your Sussex address — in person across East Sussex, Kent and West Sussex, or by video for outlying postcodes — followed by an itemised written quote within 48 hours including the customs documentation, Spanish destination agent fees and door-to-door delivery.

How our removals to Spain service works

Free survey and itemised quote

Mark or one of our senior surveyors visits your home for a no-obligation survey. We walk every room, note awkward items (pianos, antiques, anything heavy or fragile), measure access at both ends if known, and discuss timing — especially important for Spain because Spanish notario completion dates can shift on no notice. Within 48 hours you have a fixed-price written quote that already includes Spanish destination agent fees, customs handling and door-to-door delivery.

Pad-wrap and export-grade packing

Spanish removals use our white-glove pad-wrap protection on every piece of furniture — lorry pads fitted around each item in your home, taped at the seams, removed only at the Spanish destination. Fragile items go into BAR-spec export double-wall cartons from our Lower Dicker packing shop. Customers who self-pack still get our packing materials delivered; the optional full packing service transfers the customs valuation risk to us.

Road via France, or direct ferry to Bilbao/Santander

For Mediterranean Spain, Catalonia, Valencia and the Costa Blanca we drive south through France via the Channel Tunnel — total transit 3 to 5 days. For Galicia, the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and northern Castilla we often use the Brittany Ferries direct sailing from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao or Santander (24 hours at sea then a shorter Spanish leg). Either way the load is sealed for customs clearance at Sevington before departure. We quote both routes when one isn’t clearly better and let you choose.

Spanish customs and the NIE

Spanish customs require your NIE (foreigner identity number) before they release your shipment — this is the one piece of paperwork you need from the Spanish side. You can apply at a Spanish consulate in the UK before the move or in Spain after arrival; either works but the move can’t complete without it. Our Spanish destination agent files the DUA (Documento Único Administrativo) entry against your ToR1 application; for permanent residents with ToR1 approval there is no Spanish import IVA or duty.

Door-to-door delivery in Spain

Our Spanish destination agent meets the lorry at your property, unpacks furniture into the rooms you agreed in advance, removes the pad-wrap, and reassembles beds and large items. For Spanish villages with narrow medieval streets the load is transferred to a smaller transfer vehicle for the last 100 metres — this is included in the quote, not an add-on. Box-by-box unpacking is an optional extra.

Spanish regions we move to most often from Sussex

Costa Blanca

Alicante, Javea, Denia, Moraira, Benidorm, Torrevieja. Our most-frequent Spanish destination by some distance — British community is huge, infrastructure is set up for British residents. Typical 8–10 day delivery from Eastbourne via the Channel Tunnel.

Costa del Sol & Andalucía

Marbella, Estepona, Sotogrande, Malaga, Seville, Granada, the pueblos blancos. Slightly longer drive (1,800 km from Calais) so typical 10–12 days. Hillside villas often need narrow-street transfer.

Catalonia & Barcelona

Barcelona city centre, Sitges, Girona, Costa Brava (L’Escala, Cadaqués, Tossa). 8–10 days via France. Spanish destination agent in Barcelona has city-centre delivery permits and handles tight urban access.

Balearic Islands

Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera. Mainland Spain then inter-island ferry (Barcelona-Palma typically). Add 3–5 days for the crossing. Premium routing — we handle the ferry booking.

Valencia & Costa del Azahar

Valencia city, Castellon, Penyiscola, Vinaros. Quieter destination but consistent — younger families and remote workers priced out of Barcelona. Typical 9–11 days.

Galicia, Basque Country & the North

Santander, Bilbao, San Sebastian, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña. Almost always via direct Brittany Ferries crossing — total transit 5–7 days. Wet climate so packing materials need to be export grade.

Transfer of Residence (ToR1) for Spain — the savings explained

ToR1 is the EU customs relief that lets permanent UK-to-Spain movers import household goods without paying Spanish IVA (21%) or duty — potentially a five-figure saving on a 3-bed move. The four conditions are simple:

Skipping ToR1 costs roughly 21% of the declared value of your goods in Spanish IVA — a £40,000 household’s worth would cost £8,400 in import tax. We file the ToR1 for every eligible Spanish mover as standard and our agent confirms approval before the lorry leaves the UK. Second-home owners and short-stay relocations don’t qualify; for those we structure the move as a temporary admission and discuss the options at the survey.

Pets, cars, wine, antiques — the awkward stuff

Spanish removals attract more than the usual number of special items. Wine cellars are common (and yes, Spain allows you to bring personal wine collections under ToR1 provided the inventory declares them). Antiques over 100 years old may need a UK cultural export licence depending on value — we identify those at the survey. Pianos travel inside the same lorry with our trained piano-moving crews. Garden furniture and outdoor planters are fine to ship but need a phyto-sanitary check if there’s soil or living plant material. Cars and motorcycles are usually best handled by a specialist vehicle-shipping partner; we coordinate the timing so vehicle and household arrive together.

One thing we’ll tell you honestly at the survey: a lot of British white goods and electrical kitchen items are cheaper to replace in Spain than to ship. UK 13-amp appliances run on 230V/16A Spanish sockets via an adapter, but many British dishwashers and ovens don’t meet Spanish electrical safety standards if they need any servicing. We’ll flag anything that isn’t worth the freight cost.

A typical Sussex-to-Spain timeline

Most of our Spanish removals follow the same rhythm:

For northern Spain the whole thing can be done in 6 to 8 working days. For Andalucía allow 10 to 14. The Balearics add 3–5 days. The timeline only stretches if the Spanish notario’s completion shifts — in that case we store at our Lower Dicker depot in steel strong rooms until you’re ready.

Why Mark Ratcliffe Moving for your removal to Spain

We are a small, owner-managed Sussex firm that has been doing this since 2017. We are not a national franchise selling Spanish moves as a sideline — about a third of our annual workload is European and Spain is the second-biggest destination after France. The crews who pad-wrap your furniture in Sussex are the same crews who’ve done it on dozens of Spanish moves, and the Spanish destination agents we work with are the same ones we’ve worked with for years — not a name pulled from a directory the week before your move.

That matters because Spanish removals are exactly the kind of job where shortcuts show up later. The wrong DUA wording and you sit at customs for a week. The wrong vehicle for an Andalusian pueblo’s narrow streets and your goods get transhipped (badly) onto a hired van at the last minute. The wrong destination agent and the lorry arrives but nobody has the property keys.

Read what customers say on our reviews page, browse the gallery for photos of recent moves, or call Mark directly on 01323 848 008. We’ll give you straight answers about what’s worth shipping, what ToR1 saves you, and what realistic timelines look like for your Spanish region.

Frequently asked about removals to spain

How long do removals to Spain from the UK take?

Door-to-door, a sole-load to mainland Spain takes 7–12 working days. Northern Spain (Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias) is typically 6–8 days; the Mediterranean coast and Catalonia 8–10; Andalucía and the southern Costas 10–12. The Balearics add a further 3–5 days for the Barcelona-Palma ferry. Part-loads add 5–10 days while we consolidate compatible loads.

Do I need a NIE before I can import my goods to Spain?

Yes. The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the Spanish foreigner identity number and is required by Spanish customs to release your shipment. You can apply at a Spanish consulate in the UK before your move, or in person in Spain after arrival, but we cannot clear the goods at destination until the NIE is issued. We will remind you about this at the survey and our Spanish agent can introduce you to a local gestor if you need help.

Should I go by road through France or use the direct ferry to Bilbao/Santander?

For Catalonia, Valencia, the Costa Blanca and inland destinations we drive south through France via the Channel Tunnel — total transit 3 to 5 days on the road. For destinations west of Madrid, Galicia, the Basque Country and northern Andalucía the direct Brittany Ferries crossing from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao or Santander is often faster overall (24-hour sailing then a shorter Spanish leg). We quote both and pick whichever is cheaper and quicker for your destination.

Can I bring my pet, my car or my motorcycle to Spain with the household?

Pets travel separately under the Pet Travel Scheme — we will refer you to a specialist pet-transport partner. Cars and motorcycles can be shipped alongside household goods if container space allows; in practice it is usually cheaper and simpler to use a dedicated vehicle-shipping partner who handles the temporary import documentation Spain requires. We coordinate so vehicle and household arrive within a few days of each other.

How much does it cost to move from the UK to Spain?

For a typical 3-bed household from Sussex, a sole-load to Spain is usually £3,800–£7,200 depending on destination region and access. Part-loads start around £1,900 for a one-bedroom flat. Balearic destinations add £400–£700 for the inter-island ferry leg. All quotes are fixed-price after our free survey.

Will you deliver into the property in Spain or just to the curb?

Door-to-door delivery into your Spanish property as standard. Our Spanish destination agent’s crew places furniture in agreed rooms and removes the pad-wrap; box-by-box unpacking is an optional add-on. For Spanish villages with narrow streets the lorry is offloaded onto a smaller transfer vehicle for the last 100 metres at no extra cost.
