Mark Ratcliffe Moving lorry loaded for a European road removal to Belgium

Removals to Belgium from the UK are the shortest continental run we make, and the cheapest per cubic metre of any route on our rate card. Brussels is closer to our depots than Edinburgh. That proximity is why a Belgian move suits a shared load so well — the crossing is short, the motorway leg is straightforward, and you pay for the space you occupy rather than a whole lorry.

Where in Belgium we deliver

Brussels dominates our Belgian work, and for an obvious reason: the European institutions, NATO and the enormous professional-services industry around them generate a steady flow of British households on fixed-term postings. Those moves often arrive with a relocation package and need an itemised valued inventory, which we produce as standard.

Antwerp is the diamond trade, the port and a design-led city with a large international community. Ghent and Leuven are university cities, so the households tend to be academic and the timing tied to the academic year. Bruges is smaller, older and the most access-constrained place we deliver in Belgium. Liège and Wallonia are French-speaking, which changes nothing operationally but does change which language your paperwork should be in.

Belgian access: medieval centres and Brussels apartment blocks

Bruges and central Ghent are the awkward ones. Both have protected medieval cores with narrow cobbled streets, limited vehicle access and timed delivery windows, so a shuttle from a permitted parking point is normal rather than exceptional. Brussels is mostly apartment delivery, and the older townhouses in Ixelles and Saint-Gilles have the same narrow-stairwell problem as their Dutch and Parisian equivalents — an external furniture lift is sometimes the only way a sofa gets to the third floor.

We survey for all of it. If a shuttle vehicle or a lift is needed it is priced into the quote from the start rather than added on the day.

Belgian customs and the removal-goods relief

Belgium is in the EU and the UK is not, so a Belgian move is a formal import. Used household effects can normally come in free of duty and import VAT when you are transferring your normal residence, on the familiar conditions: residence outside the EU beforehand, ownership and use of the goods for a qualifying period, and import within a set window of establishing residence.

What Belgian customs want is a proper itemised inventory with values, evidence of your Belgian address and proof you are genuinely relocating. Registering with your commune is part of establishing that residence, and the timing of it against your shipment is worth planning before you book. Alcohol, tobacco and vehicles fall outside the standard relief. We prepare the file with you before the vehicle leaves the depot.

Why Mark Ratcliffe Moving for your Belgian move

We are a family-run Sussex firm, established in 2017, working from two depots — Lower Dicker in East Sussex and Croydon — and European road removals are core work rather than a sideline. Our crews pad-wrap every piece in your home using our white-glove method, build custom crates for anything fragile, and produce the valued inventory a customs entry depends on. We are a member of the British Association of Removers Overseas Group and work to the BS 8564 standard.

What removals to Belgium cost

These are the rates we quote from, not a teaser figure with the extras stripped out. A shared load to Belgium starts at £92 per cubic metre with a 3 m³ minimum, and a dedicated vehicle — yours alone, no transhipment — starts at £2,450. Typical transit is 5–8 days.

Removals to Belgium — typical shared-load prices by home size
Your homeTypical volumeFrom
Studio or single room10 m³£920
One-bedroom flat18 m³£1,655
Two-bedroom house30 m³£2,760
Three-bedroom house45 m³£4,140
Four-bedroom house62 m³£5,705
Five-bedroom house or larger85 m³£7,820

These are the prices you pay. International removals are zero-rated for UK VAT, so unlike a domestic house move there is nothing to add on top. Import duty or VAT levied by the destination country, where your goods do not qualify for transfer-of-residence relief, is separate and is payable there rather than to us.

Above roughly 55 m³ a dedicated vehicle usually beats the shared-load rate. We will tell you when that crossover applies to your move rather than let you overpay for groupage. Volumes above are typical rather than measured; the survey sets the real figure and the quote is then fixed in writing. Our free volume calculator gives you a cubic-feet number in a couple of minutes without needing to speak to anyone.

Frequently asked about removals to Belgium

How much does a removal to Belgium cost?

Shared loads start at £92 per cubic metre with a 3 m³ minimum — our lowest European rate, because Belgium is the shortest continental run we make. A one-bedroom flat of about 18 m³ is roughly £1,660 and a three-bedroom house of about 45 m³ roughly £4,140. A dedicated vehicle starts at £2,450. There is no UK VAT to add; international removals are zero-rated.

How long does a removal to Belgium take?

Typically 5–8 days door to door. The crossing is short and the motorway run from Calais or Dunkirk is straightforward. A dedicated vehicle travels direct and sits at the fast end; a shared load waits for the scheduled departure, which is what keeps the price down.

Can you deliver into central Bruges or Ghent?

Yes, and we plan for it. Both have protected medieval centres with narrow cobbled streets, restricted vehicle access and timed delivery windows, so a shuttle from a permitted parking point is normal rather than exceptional. We establish it at survey and price the shuttle into the quote rather than adding it on the day.

Do you handle relocation-package moves to Brussels?

Regularly. The European institutions, NATO and the professional-services industry around them generate a steady flow of fixed-term postings, and those moves usually need an itemised valued inventory, a delivery window agreed in advance and invoicing to an employer or relocation management company. We are set up for all three.

Will I pay duty bringing my furniture to Belgium?

Normally not. Used household effects can usually be imported free of duty and import VAT when you are transferring your normal residence, subject to the usual conditions on prior residence outside the EU, ownership and use of the goods, and importing within the qualifying window. Alcohol, tobacco and vehicles sit outside the relief. We prepare the documentation with you before departure.
