Mark Ratcliffe Moving road-train lorry on a European removal to Luxembourg

Removals to Luxembourg from the UK are almost always work-driven, and the work is almost always finance, EU institutions or the professional-services firms that orbit both. It is a small country with an outsized economy, three official languages and one of the largest cross-border workforces in Europe — a great many people employed in Luxembourg actually live over the border in Belgium, France or Germany, which is worth deciding before you ship anything.

Luxembourg City, Kirchberg and where arrivals actually live

Kirchberg is the plateau where the EU institutions and much of the banking sector sit, and a large share of our Luxembourg deliveries go to the modern apartment blocks around it — generally straightforward, with lifts and loading access. Luxembourg City proper is more interesting: the old town is UNESCO-listed, built around a dramatic gorge, and the streets in the Ville Haute are narrow and steeply pitched.

Esch-sur-Alzette and the south are more affordable and increasingly popular with families priced out of the capital. And a substantial number of arrivals settle across the border in Arlon, Thionville or Trier and commute in — if that is your plan, tell us early, because it changes which country your customs entry is made into and getting that wrong is an expensive correction.

Corporate moves, inventories and invoicing

Because so much Luxembourg work arrives through an employer, the requirements are usually contractual rather than physical. Relocation packages typically want an itemised valued inventory, a delivery window written into the agreement, and invoicing directly to the employer or the relocation management company. We handle all three routinely, and we will produce the documentation in the format your provider asks for rather than making them adapt to ours.

Housing in Luxembourg is expensive and tight, and short-term lets while searching are common. If your permanent address is not settled when the vehicle is ready, our Lower Dicker storage can hold everything in the UK — almost always cheaper than storage at the far end, and much cheaper than a failed delivery.

Luxembourg customs and the paperwork

Luxembourg is in the EU and the UK is not, so this is a formal import. Used household effects can normally be brought in free of duty and import VAT when you are transferring your normal residence, on the usual conditions covering prior residence outside the EU, ownership and use of the goods, and importing within the qualifying window after establishing residence.

You will need an itemised inventory with values, proof of your Luxembourg address and evidence you are genuinely relocating. Registering with your commune is part of establishing residence, and the sequence matters — goods arriving before you exist in the system is the usual way a European move goes wrong. Alcohol, tobacco and vehicles fall outside the standard relief.

Why Mark Ratcliffe Moving for your Luxembourg move

We are a family-run Sussex firm, established in 2017, working from depots at Lower Dicker and Croydon. Our own crews pad-wrap every piece in your home using our white-glove method, build custom crates where something needs it, and compile the valued inventory a customs entry and a relocation package both depend on. We do not hand your goods through a chain of subcontractors.

We are a member of the British Association of Removers Overseas Group and work to the BS 8564 standard. Read our reviews or call 01323 848 008.

What removals to Luxembourg cost

These are the rates we quote from, not a teaser figure with the extras stripped out. A shared load to Luxembourg starts at £105 per cubic metre with a 3 m³ minimum, and a dedicated vehicle — yours alone, no transhipment — starts at £2,850. Typical transit is 6–9 days.

Removals to Luxembourg — typical shared-load prices by home size
Your homeTypical volumeFrom
Studio or single room10 m³£1,050
One-bedroom flat18 m³£1,890
Two-bedroom house30 m³£3,150
Three-bedroom house45 m³£4,725
Four-bedroom house62 m³£6,510
Five-bedroom house or larger85 m³£8,925

These are the prices you pay. International removals are zero-rated for UK VAT, so unlike a domestic house move there is nothing to add on top. Import duty or VAT levied by the destination country, where your goods do not qualify for transfer-of-residence relief, is separate and is payable there rather than to us.

Above roughly 55 m³ a dedicated vehicle usually beats the shared-load rate. We will tell you when that crossover applies to your move rather than let you overpay for groupage. Volumes above are typical rather than measured; the survey sets the real figure and the quote is then fixed in writing. Our free volume calculator gives you a cubic-feet number in a couple of minutes without needing to speak to anyone.

Frequently asked about removals to Luxembourg

How much does a removal to Luxembourg cost?

Shared loads start at £105 per cubic metre with a 3 m³ minimum. A one-bedroom flat of about 18 m³ is roughly £1,890 and a three-bedroom house of about 45 m³ roughly £4,725. A dedicated vehicle — yours alone, no transhipment — starts at £2,850. There is no UK VAT to add; international removals are zero-rated.

How long does a removal to Luxembourg take?

Typically 6–9 days door to door. A dedicated vehicle travels direct and sits at the fast end of that; a shared load waits for a scheduled departure, which is the trade-off that keeps the cost down.

I will work in Luxembourg but live over the border. Does that matter?

Very much, and it is worth telling us early. Luxembourg has one of the largest cross-border workforces in Europe and many arrivals settle in Arlon, Thionville or Trier and commute in. Your customs entry has to be made into the country you are actually residing in, and correcting that after the fact is expensive.

Can you invoice my employer or relocation company directly?

Yes, and it is common on this route. Most Luxembourg moves arrive through an employer, so we routinely provide an itemised valued inventory, agree a delivery window in advance and invoice the employer or relocation management company in the format their provider requires.

Can you hold our belongings while we find somewhere to live?

Yes. Luxembourg housing is expensive and tight, and short-term lets while searching are normal. Our Lower Dicker storage can hold everything in the UK until your permanent address is settled, which is almost always cheaper than storage in Luxembourg and much cheaper than a failed delivery.
