Removals to Austria from the UK split neatly into two kinds of move. There are the city moves — a posting to one of the international organisations in Vienna, a university post in Graz or Innsbruck, a job in Linz — and there are the mountain moves, to a chalet in the Tyrol or an apartment in a ski resort. Both run by road across Germany, but they finish very differently. One ends in the courtyard of a nineteenth-century apartment block, the other at the top of a switchback road that may have snow on it.
Vienna takes most of our Austrian work. It is home to one of the United Nations’ main offices and a long list of international organisations, so many moves there come with an institutional relocation package and a fixed start date. Salzburg and Linz bring a mix of work and family moves, Graz is a university city in the south-east, and Innsbruck is the capital of the Tyrol and the gateway to the mountains.
Beyond the cities, the Alpine resorts — Kitzbühel, St. Anton, Ischgl and the valleys around them — account for a share of chalet and second-home moves, and Vorarlberg in the far west sits right against our removals to Switzerland route. We deliver to the whole of Austria on the same service; what varies is the access, not the country.
A chalet delivery is planned around the road up to it. Mountain roads can be narrow, steep and tightly hairpinned, some carry weight limits, and plenty of chalets are simply not reachable by a full-size removal vehicle. Where that is the case we plan a transfer to a smaller vehicle in the valley and shuttle the load up, which is slower but is the only safe way to do it.
Then there is winter. Austria has winter-equipment rules for vehicles from November to April, and heavy vehicles must carry snow chains through the core winter months. A delivery that is routine in June can be difficult in January, so for a mountain address we talk to you about timing before we fix a date. If the move has to happen in winter, we plan for it; if it can wait for spring, that is often the better answer.
Second homes bring their own timing. A ski apartment is usually furnished for the season, so owners tend to want it done in the quiet weeks between the end of the winter season and the start of summer, or in the autumn before the lifts open — when the roads are clear, the resort car parks are empty and the building manager has time to let the crew in. Much of Vienna is made up of grand late-nineteenth-century apartment buildings: high ceilings, wide stone stairs, and lifts that were added later and are often too small for anything larger than a chair. Many are built around an inner courtyard reached through a gateway from the street, which changes where the vehicle parks and how far everything is carried.
Where the vehicle needs the kerb, a temporary no-stopping zone can be requested from the authorities in advance, and we plan the delivery date around it. On the paperwork side, Austria requires you to register your address — the Meldezettel — within three days of moving in, and that registration becomes part of the evidence that you are genuinely transferring your residence.
We survey the building and the street before we quote, so the crew size, carry distance and any furniture lift are all known in advance.
Austria is in the EU and the UK is not, so a move to Austria is a formal import. Used household effects can normally be brought in free of duty and import VAT as Übersiedlungsgut — removal goods — when you are transferring your normal residence. The standard EU conditions apply: at least twelve months living outside the EU, the goods owned and used for at least six months, and imported within twelve months of establishing residence. Alcohol, tobacco and vehicles are handled separately.
Your Meldezettel, your residence documentation and a numbered, valued inventory form the core of the customs file. The Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance, which runs Austrian customs, publishes the current rules, and we prepare the paperwork with you before the vehicle leaves Britain.
