The Free State is our longest South African route: sea freight to Durban or Cape Town, then a road haul of the order of a thousand kilometres into the interior. We plan the packing, paperwork and farm-gate delivery for that distance.
Removals to Bloemfontein and the Free State from the UK go further inland than any other South African move we plan. There is no port in the Free State, so every container sails to Durban or Cape Town, clears customs there, and then makes a long road journey across the interior. The people making this move are rarely following a trend. They are going back to a family farm, joining relatives in Bloemfontein, taking a post at a hospital, a university or one of the courts, or retiring somewhere wide, quiet and dry after years in a crowded corner of south-east England. It is a move that rewards patience and good packing more than speed.
Bloemfontein, the provincial capital, is also South Africa’s judicial capital, home to the Supreme Court of Appeal and the University of the Free State, and it sits on the N1 between Cape Town and Johannesburg. Most city deliveries are to established suburbs of freestanding houses and to newer security estates on the edges of town. The gold-mining city of Welkom and the farming centre of Kroonstad lie to the north; Bethlehem sits in the eastern Free State towards the mountains; and Parys, on the Vaal River, has become a small-town favourite for people who want quiet within reach of Gauteng.

After the container clears at the coast, it is loaded onto a truck for the drive into the interior. From Cape Town that is a haul of the order of a thousand kilometres up the N1; from Durban the road climbs the escarpment and crosses the high veld. Either way your furniture spends days on the road after weeks at sea, and road vibration is harder on a load than a calm ocean. We pack Free State loads so that every carton is full, every piece is braced, and nothing heavy sits on anything that can crush.
The last few kilometres are often the hardest. Farm addresses are reached on gravel roads that turn slippery in a summer thunderstorm and corrugated in the dry winter, through gates, over cattle grids and sometimes across a low-water crossing. A full-size container truck may not reach the house, and a transfer to a smaller vehicle on firm ground is common. The Free State’s winters bring hard frosts and very dry air, so solid timber furniture from a British house can shrink slightly in its first season; it settles, but it is worth knowing.
A pin on a map, photos of the gate and the drive, and the name of someone who can meet the truck make a rural delivery far more straightforward. In town, Bloemfontein’s security estates run access rules much like those in Gauteng, with guardhouse registration and set delivery hours, and our destination agent arranges those with the body corporate before the truck sets out.
Your goods clear SARS customs at the coastal port, not in Bloemfontein, so the paperwork needs to be complete before the ship sails. Our destination agent files the P1.160 application for a rebate of duty on used personal effects against a permanent residence permit, a critical-skills visa or a relative’s permit — a visitor visa does not qualify — and the rebate covers goods you have owned and used for at least six months. Anything newer may attract duty plus 15% VAT, which matters for people who stock up on appliances and tools before a move to somewhere remote.
Rural moves raise two further questions. Firearms need a Section 16 import permit issued by SAPS, and our honest advice is either to leave them in the UK or to use a specialist firearms-import agent rather than putting them in a household container. And anything that has been used outdoors — garden machinery, tack, tools, boots — must be thoroughly cleaned of soil before packing; plants, seeds and food are not shipped. Allow 7–9 weeks door to door. That is the longest window we publish for South Africa, and the reason is the combination: the sea voyage to Durban or Cape Town, SARS clearance at the port (typically 5–14 working days once the container is presented), and then the long road haul inland, followed on rural jobs by a transfer to a smaller vehicle. A shared LCL consignment adds 2–3 weeks for consolidation.
With a route this long, the most useful thing you can do is avoid a rushed start. If a house sale completes before the farmhouse is ready, or you want to arrive and settle before the furniture follows, we can keep your belongings in steel strong rooms at our Lower Dicker depot through storage before shipping overseas, then book the sailing when you are ready to receive it.
It also helps to think about what travels with you rather than in the container. A farmhouse two hours from the nearest large town is not the place to discover that the kettle, the bedding and the children’s school uniforms are somewhere on the N1. We suggest a separate set of essentials for the first weeks, carried as luggage, and a clearly labelled “open first” group of cartons loaded last so they come off the truck first. Tell us who will be at the property on delivery day and how to reach them, because on a rural job the driver may lose phone signal on the final stretch.
