Removals to Durban and KwaZulu-Natal from the UK are, more than anything, a lesson in humidity. The KwaZulu-Natal coast is warm all year and damp for much of it, with heavy summer rain and sticky nights, and a sealed steel container that has crossed the equator arrives into that air. Get that right and Durban is a rewarding place to move to: families drawn by the beaches and the schools on the North Coast, South Africans returning to relatives in Pietermaritzburg or the Upper Highway, and people who simply want to swim in the Indian Ocean in July.
Umhlanga, just north of the city, is the address most of our Durban customers are heading for: apartment blocks along the beachfront, secure estates on the ridge behind, and the shops and offices of the new town centre. Further up the North Coast, Ballito has grown into a sizeable holiday and retirement town of estates and sea-view homes. In the city itself, the older suburbs on the Berea ridge have characterful houses on steep plots with views over the harbour.
Inland, the Upper Highway towns of Hillcrest and Kloof are greener and slightly cooler, and popular with families. Around eighty kilometres up the N3 is Pietermaritzburg, the provincial capital, where a delivery climbs away from the coast into a noticeably different climate, with cooler winter nights and misty mornings that feel a world away from the beachfront. The practical difference on a Durban move starts in your UK home. Once your furniture is in, open the windows and give it a few days of air. It is the single best thing you can do for it in a humid first week.
The port of Durban is one of the busiest container ports in Africa, and SARS customs there is methodical. Our destination agent lodges the P1.160 application for a rebate of duty on used personal effects, which needs a permanent residence permit, a critical-skills visa or a relative’s permit — a visitor visa does not qualify — and covers goods you have owned and used for at least six months. If SARS inspects, it checks the container against the inventory, so the list needs to be detailed, in English and valued in Rand, and it has to match what is actually in the boxes.
For a KwaZulu-Natal move the items that raise questions are organic ones. Food, plants and seeds are not shipped. Wooden garden furniture, wicker, outdoor tools and anything that has been on soil should be cleaned thoroughly before packing so it passes a biosecurity look without delay. If your residence permit is still being processed when the ship docks, the container can be held in bonded storage at Durban for a few weeks, but it cannot clear without the documents. Allow 5–7 weeks door to door from Felixstowe to a Durban address on direct sea freight. The sea leg is longer than to Cape Town because the ship continues round the coast, and a busy port can add a few days at berth. SARS clearance typically takes 5–14 working days once the container is presented, provided the paperwork is complete before departure.

Keep passports, permits, the inventory and your bank documents in your hand luggage, never in the container, because our destination agent may need copies while the shipment is at the port. Families often rent furnished for the first month in Umhlanga or on the North Coast while they look at schools and suburbs, then give us the final address once they have signed a lease. That works well, provided we know the plan early enough to time the sailing around it.
