Removals to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Queensland from the UK are for people who want the sunshine without Sydney’s prices. South-east Queensland has a warm climate all year, a relaxed outdoor way of life and property that goes noticeably further than in Sydney or Melbourne, and that combination makes it a favourite with retirees and with families who want space. The same climate is what we pack for. Queensland is subtropical in the south and tropical in the north, which brings humidity, summer storms and, for the far north, a cyclone season — all of which affect how a container should be loaded and when it should be delivered.
Brisbane is a river city, spread along the loops of the Brisbane River, with leafy older suburbs close in and newer estates stretching out towards Ipswich and Logan. An hour or so south, the Gold Coast is a strip of beach suburbs and apartment towers that has drawn British retirees for years, with quieter hinterland towns behind it. North of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast — Noosa, Maroochydore, Caloundra — is lower-rise and a little calmer, and very popular with people who want the coast without the high-rises.
Then there is Cairns, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and a very long way north of Brisbane by road. A Cairns delivery is a tropical delivery, and we plan it as one. Anywhere else in Queensland, from Toowoomba on the Darling Downs to the coastal towns between Brisbane and Cairns, we quote individually after the survey rather than pretending it works like a suburban drop.
It helps to know what kind of property you are going to before the survey. A Gold Coast apartment is often smaller than the Sussex house it replaces, and a raised Queenslander has fewer internal walls and more verandah than a British semi, so some pieces simply will not have a place. We go round each room with that in mind and help you decide what earns its space in the container. Brisbane’s western and southern suburbs, and parts of the Gold Coast hinterland, also have large blocks with long drives, which are easy to reach but add carrying time.

Brisbane’s classic house is the Queenslander: a timber home raised on stumps to let the air flow underneath, with a verandah wrapped around it and an external staircase up to the living floor. They are lovely houses and awkward deliveries. Everything goes up those outside stairs, which are often steep and sometimes turn, so heavy items take more hands and more time than the same furniture into a brick bungalow. We ask for photographs of the stairs at survey stage.
The Gold Coast is the opposite: tall apartment towers along the beach, each with a building manager, a service lift to book, set moving hours and sometimes a loading bay a full-size truck will not fit. Those arrangements have to be in place before the container leaves the port.
The climate needs respect. South-east Queensland summers are hot and humid with fierce afternoon storms, and the far north has a wet season from roughly November to April, when cyclones are possible and roads can be cut by flooding. Our Brisbane agent books deliveries around the weather, and we pack so that damp is kept away from the furniture: nothing goes in the container wet, fridges and freezers travel fully dried out, and moisture absorbers go in with the load.
At the Port of Brisbane your container is examined by Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry officers, with customs clearance by the Australian Border Force, and our Brisbane agent attends on your behalf. The rules are national, but the Queensland lifestyle shapes what gets shipped. People moving to the coast bring surfboards, wetsuits, paddleboards and fishing rods; retirees bring garden furniture for the new patio and the tools to look after a tropical garden; families bring bikes and outdoor toys.
Sand, soil, seeds and insects are the targets, so every one of those items is washed, dried thoroughly and packed separately where the officers can see it. Drying matters more than usual on this route, because anything packed damp in Sussex arrives mouldy after two months at sea into a humid port. Wicker, cane and untreated wooden pieces are the other common problem; where they are not dressed timber, we arrange ISPM-15 treatment in Britain. Food, plants and seeds never go in the container.
Sea transit to Brisbane is typically 7–9 weeks, running via Suez and Singapore up to the Australian east coast. After arrival, allow a further 1–2 weeks for inspection, customs and delivery. The Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast are within easy reach of the port.
Cairns is different: the road north from Brisbane is long, and in the wet season it can be interrupted by weather, so allow extra time and some flexibility on the delivery date. A shared LCL consignment adds time at the UK end while it waits for consolidation. If your Queensland purchase is not ready when your Sussex sale completes, we can hold everything in storage before shipping, and late July and August bookings go first.
For Cairns and the rest of the far north, we also think about when the ship will arrive, not just when it leaves. A container landing in the middle of the wet season may clear quickly and then wait for a clear window on the road, so if your dates are flexible, sailing to arrive in the dry months from about May to October makes for a calmer delivery.
