Removals to New Zealand from the UK ask a little more of the packing than any other route we run. New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries operates a biosecurity regime that is even stricter than Australia’s, for a country whose farming, forests and native wildlife have no defence against pests from elsewhere, and it is enforced carefully at every port. The reward is a country that many of our customers describe as Britain with more space: smaller cities, wilder country close at hand, and a way of life built around the outdoors. Auckland is the country’s largest city by far, spread across an isthmus of volcanic cones and harbours, and home to most of the jobs that bring skilled migrants. Its older suburbs are full of timber villas and bungalows; its newer ones stretch north and south. Wellington, the capital, sits around a harbour at the southern tip of the North Island and is known for wind, coffee and houses clinging to steep hillsides. Hamilton, inland from Auckland in the Waikato, and Tauranga on the Bay of Plenty, with its beaches and its busy port, are popular with families and retirees who want New Zealand life at a gentler pace.
On the South Island, Christchurch is the largest city and the base for the Canterbury plains and the Southern Alps. Wellington is the delivery people ask us about most. Much of the city is built on hills, and plenty of houses sit well above or below the road, reached by long flights of steps or a steep path rather than a driveway. A few have no vehicle access at all. The crew carry everything by hand, so a Wellington hillside delivery can take much longer than the same furniture into a flat-fronted house, and it needs the right number of people on the day. Photographs of the approach, taken from the road, tell us more than any address can.
Auckland has its own challenges: heavy traffic, hilly streets on the old volcanic slopes, and apartment buildings in the city centre with lift bookings and loading-bay rules. Hamilton and Tauranga are generally easier, with more single-storey homes and more room to park.
Distance matters too. New Zealand is long and thin, and getting a load from Auckland to Christchurch or Dunedin is a significant journey that includes a sea crossing. The weather is maritime and changeable, with rain at any time of year, so pad-wrap and export cartons do the same job on a Wellington doorstep as they do in a Sussex drizzle.
Every household container arriving in New Zealand is examined by the Ministry for Primary Industries, and customs clearance is handled by the New Zealand Customs Service. Our destination agent represents you at both. MPI looks for the same things as Australia — soil, plant material, seeds, insects, untreated wood, food and animal products — but the tolerance is lower, and treatment is required more readily when something is found.
Outdoor equipment is the heart of it, and New Zealanders own a lot of outdoor equipment. Tramping boots, tents, mountain bikes, kayaks, ski gear and fishing tackle all have to be spotless. Freshwater fishing gear, waders and boats deserve extra attention because New Zealand works hard to keep freshwater pests out of its rivers and lakes, so we clean them and make sure they are completely dry. Garden tools and furniture are scrubbed, anything wooden that is not dressed timber receives ISPM-15 treatment in Britain, and nothing edible or growing is shipped. We would rather spend an extra hour in Sussex than have a container held in Auckland.
Total transit to New Zealand is typically 8–10 weeks. Sailings either run direct from the UK to Auckland or go via Sydney, where the container is transhipped on to a vessel for New Zealand. After arrival, allow time for MPI inspection and customs clearance — usually a matter of days for a clean load — and then the road leg, which is short for Auckland and longer for the South Island.

New Zealand residence requirements also affect the timing. The customs relief for household goods generally depends on you arriving to take up residence, and your destination agent will need your passport, visa details and a full inventory before the goods can be cleared, so it pays to have the visa settled before the container sails. Ship too early, before anyone is in the country to receive it, and the container can sit at the port accruing storage while you wait. We plan the collection date so that the ship arrives after you do, with a sensible margin.
