Container removals from Sussex to Sydney and the rest of New South Wales, packed by our own crew at your home and shipped into Port Botany. Biosecurity-ready packing, strata building bookings handled, and a destination agent to deliver to your door.
Removals to Sydney and New South Wales from the UK are the busiest part of our Australian work, and it is easy to see why: Sydney is where the jobs, the flights and a great many British family connections meet. The households we pack for this route are varied — nurses and engineers arriving on skilled visas, parents following grown-up children who settled on the Northern Beaches, Australians going home after years in Britain. What they have in common is a container that must cross to the far side of the world, pass one of the strictest biosecurity inspections anywhere, and then be carried into a home that might be a tenth-floor harbourside apartment or a timber cottage two hours up the coast.
Most of our Sydney containers finish in one of a handful of places. The inner suburbs — Paddington, Surry Hills, Balmain, Newtown — are full of Victorian terraces with narrow frontages, and draw younger professionals who want to walk to work. The eastern suburbs and the lower North Shore are dominated by apartment blocks, many of them with harbour or ocean views and a building manager who runs the lift like a railway timetable. The Northern Beaches, from Manly up to Palm Beach, are where British families with school-age children tend to land, often in a house with a garden, a garage and a steep drive.
North of the city, the Central Coast around Gosford and Terrigal offers more space for the money within commuting distance, and Newcastle and the Hunter Valley further up the Pacific Motorway attract retirees, healthcare workers and people who simply want a slower pace than Sydney allows. We handle all of these on the same service. If your address is elsewhere in New South Wales — the Blue Mountains, the South Coast, a rural property inland — tell us at the survey and we will plan the road leg from Port Botany individually rather than assuming it runs like a city delivery.
If you are still deciding between cities, the Australia and New Zealand overview compares every destination we ship to, and our guide to moving to Australia from the UK covers visas, settling in and what to ship.
The part of a Sydney delivery that needs the most planning is rarely the road; it is the building. Most Sydney apartments sit under a strata scheme, and the strata manager or building manager sets the rules for moving in: the service lift has to be booked, often for a fixed window on a weekday, its walls padded before anything goes in, and the loading dock may have a height limit that a full-size removal truck cannot clear. Some buildings ask for a refundable bond against damage to common areas. None of this is difficult, but all of it has to be arranged before the container is released from the port.
The old terraces of the inner west and the eastern suburbs bring the opposite problem: no lift, no rear lane, a front door opening straight on to a narrow pavement and a staircase that turns sharply halfway up. Street parking is scarce, so where the truck will stand has to be worked out in advance. Out on the Northern Beaches, steep driveways and houses set well below road level mean a longer carry than the address suggests.
Then there is the climate. A January delivery in western Sydney can mean a day well into the high thirties, so we ask for early starts in the Australian summer. Everything we learn at the survey about your new home goes on the paperwork we send to the Sydney agent.
Every household container arriving in Sydney is opened and examined. Biosecurity is run by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry — many people and much of the industry still say “AQIS”, the old name — and customs by the Australian Border Force, which will want your declaration and an inventory it can match against the load. Port Botany is a busy port, and a container held back for treatment joins a queue, which is why a single contaminated item can add anything from one to three weeks to your delivery.
Sydney buyers tend to trip up on the same things: the lawnmower and strimmer for the new garden, bicycles, the barbecue that came out every summer in Sussex, golf clubs, and boots worn on a last walk on the Downs. We pre-clean each of those to inspection standard, pack them apart from household cartons, and list them clearly so the officer can find them. Wooden items that are not dressed timber are flagged for ISPM-15 treatment in Britain, and food, plants and seeds stay behind. The current rules are published by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; our export packing and crating is built around them.
Sea transit from Felixstowe to Sydney is typically 6–9 weeks. After arrival, allow a further 1–2 weeks for biosecurity inspection, customs clearance and local delivery. The vessel runs via Suez and Singapore to the Australian east coast, and we send you position updates every fortnight while it is at sea.
A 40-foot sole-use container sealed on your Sussex driveway follows the sailing schedule directly. A shared LCL consignment waits for enough freight to fill a container, which usually adds a couple of weeks at the UK end but keeps a smaller move affordable. For Newcastle, the Hunter Valley or the Central Coast, the extra road distance from Port Botany adds little. Late July and August are the busiest months across the industry, so book early if you are moving then; if your house sale completes before you are ready to sail, we can hold everything in storage before shipping overseas.
We are a family-run removals firm, established in 2017 at our Lower Dicker depot in East Sussex, and our crew pack every Australian container themselves rather than handing it to a casual team. Mark or one of our senior surveyors walks every room with you, notes what will need pre-cleaning, and gives you a fixed written quote within 48 hours. Our full packing service covers the whole house in export cartons; if you want to do some of it yourself, we deliver export-grade packing materials first. A marble table top or a large mirror goes in a box from our custom crate service, and an upright or grand gets proper piano moving before it goes into the container.
We are a member of the British Association of Removers Overseas Group and work to BS 8564, the standard for international removals, with marine transit insurance arranged through a specialist broker. See how we handle other long-haul work on our international removals page, compare the route with removals to Melbourne and Victoria, read our customer reviews, or call Mark on 01323 848 008 to talk the move through.
Sydney is our most frequent Australian destination, but the container route, the climate and the delivery change a good deal from one state to the next.
Port Botany, Sydney’s container port on Botany Bay. The container is examined there for biosecurity and cleared by customs, and our destination agent in Sydney then delivers by road to your address, whether that is in the city, on the Central Coast or up in the Hunter Valley.
Yes. Most Sydney apartments are strata buildings with rules about moving in: the lift has to be booked and padded, there may be fixed hours, a loading-dock height limit or a refundable bond. Send us the building manager’s details or the by-laws and we pass the requirements to our Sydney agent before the container is released.
Yes. Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast are all on the same service as Sydney itself, with the road leg running north from Port Botany. Rural Hunter properties with long drives are surveyed for access so the right vehicle is sent.
Allow 6–9 weeks of sea transit from Felixstowe to Sydney, then 1–2 weeks for biosecurity inspection, customs and local delivery. A shared LCL consignment usually waits a little longer at the UK end for consolidation.
Yes, provided they are spotless. Bikes, barbecues, mowers and garden tools are exactly what the inspection officers look at first, so we pre-clean them to biosecurity standard in Sussex, pack them separately and list them clearly. Dirty items are the most common reason a Sydney container is held for treatment.
